A Note From DG Una
Dear Friends,

A very Merry Christmas, Happy Holidays and Joyous New Year from the Martone Family to you!  All the best from Una, Mike, Michael and McCaffrey.  We are full of HOPE for all good things in 2018 and looking forward to sharing many Rotary moments with the fine folks in District 7390.

Yours in Rotary,

Una Martone
2017/18 District Governor
Shout Outs!
Shout Out to everyone in District 7390 who has already registered for the 2018 International Convention in Toronto.  At 47 already registered, and still counting, we will far exceed my goal!  Stay tuned for details on group transportation in some pretty fancy wheels!

Shout Out to the Rotary Club of Mechanicsburg-North for leading the district in membership gains at PLUS 15 year to date!  Club President John Anthony (far left) pictured here with some of the club’s newest members.  A second meeting day and time is largely responsible for attracting new members who can’t make the club’s traditional Thursday morning meeting.

Shout Out to all of the families hosting Youth Exchange students and for welcoming these young people into your family holiday traditions.  Imagine the life-changing impact you are making and the life-long bonds you are creating by sharing our customs.  From what I’ve heard, there are some exciting holiday plans in the works.  Have fun!

Shout Out to all of the clubs working in conjunction with The Salvation Army this holiday season!  Until now, I never realized just how many clubs across the district do bell ringing!  Kudos to all the bell ringers and “ding dong” sign holders working to raise critical funds for the good works of The Salvation Army.  Pictured here are Dr. Ski, Ashley Tedor and Karen Paris of the Rotary Club of Harrisburg “ringing” at Strawberry Square.  Don’t forget to include these bell ringing hours in your club’s total number of volunteer hours at the end of the year.

Passing of Long-Time Hanover Rotarian Art Stabler
Earlier this week, the Rotary Club of Hanover, and Rotary worldwide, lost one of its long time and faithful members, Art Stabler.  Art was 92 years old.  Art passed away this past weekend and will be sorely missed.  Art was a true Rotarian in every sense of the word.  He joined Rotary on 12 November 1964.  He was Hanover’s President in 1973-1974.  He was very active with the Youth Exchange Program and was District’s 7390 Youth Exchange Chairperson for several years.  Art was a World War II veteran.  However, here is what was most impressive about Art…he had 53 years of PERFECT Rotary attendance!  As our District Governor, Una Martone, said; “What a loss for Rotary, but an attendance legacy to which we can all aspire.”  During the last couple of years, Art continually made the dedicated effort to come to Rotary.  Assisted mostly by his daughter, Becky, and at times by his son, Don, Art kept that Rotary sparkle in his eyes.  Our deepest condolences and sympathies go out to the entire Stabler family.  We will keep them all in our thoughts and prayers.

Visitation will be held at the Feiser Funeral Home in New Oxford, Tuesday, Dec 26, 6-8pm.  The funeral will be Wednesday, Dec 27, 11am at Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore Street, Gettysburg PA 17325.  Lunch and meet the family will be held afterwards.  The address for the family is:
The Stabler Family
726 Pine Run Rd.
Abbottstown PA 17301
Gettysburg Reads to Students
Rotary Club of Gettysburg members read “Biscuit’s Day at the Farm” to first grade students in area after school programs the week of Dec. 18. After the reading, all students received a copy of the book. Rotarians Alex Hayes and Ashley Andyshak Hayes read to Saint Francis Xavier Catholic School students on Dec. 21. Ashley is pictured with some of the young readers.

Colonial Park Rings Salvation Army Bell
The Rotary Club of Colonial Park rang the kettle bell for the Salvation Army on Tuesday, December 5. Their shift brought in $292.28 while ringing the bell at Boscov's. That money will be used to provide new school clothing to 14 kids in need, or to feed 117 hot breakfast meals to hungry people through the Salvation Army breakfast program.

Gettysburg Rings Salvation Army Bell

The Rotary Club of Gettysburg helped out with bell ringing again this year at the local Walmart to benefit the Salvation Army.  December 6 was Rotary's Day to ring the bell.  Club members covered that entire day and a number of other times during the holidays.  Shown in the photo are father and daughter Gettysburg Rotarian's Dale Dickey and Jody Dickey.

Extended Deadline for Short-Term Youth Exchange Program
The most powerful force in the promotion of international understanding and peace is exposure to different cultures. The world becomes a smaller, friendlier place when we learn that all people — regardless of nationality — desire the same basic things: a safe, comfortable environment that allows for a rich and satisfying life for our children and ourselves. Youth Exchange provides thousands of young people with the opportunity to meet people from other lands and to experience their cultures. This plants the seeds for a lifetime of international understanding.
