A Note from the District Governor
Dear Friends ~

Imagine being face to face with Rotary International President Ian Riseley and members of the RI Board of Directors and Trustees of The Rotary Foundation and being able to ask them anything, literally ANYTHING.  Imagine being able to meet the first female Rotarian in the history of this organization, Sylvia Whitlock from Duarte California.  Imagine reliving the experience with her as she accounted several years of history.   Imagine hearing from a Rotary Peace Scholar who now works in the nation’s largest think tank and is tasked with helping the global north find peace in the midst of the nuclear arms race.  Imagine hearing the heartfelt story of a German-born descendent of a Nazi soldier who converted to Judaism and became a doctor to try and make up for the horrendous acts of his father.  You could have heard a pin drop in the room during his presentation.  Imagine a supercharged District Conference with over 600 Rotarians gathered to learn, share best practices, and celebrate service.  These are snapshots from the 2017 Zone Institute for Rotary Zones 24 & 32.

Rotary International Zones 24 & 32 are represented by a community of Rotarians spanning two languages and four countries: Bermuda, Canada, France and the United States.  A Zone Institute is scheduled each year as a way for districts to “check in” with Rotary International and fellow district leaders.  Rotary International shares information and mid-year results and charges district leaders and upcoming district leaders to stay focused, motivated, and inspired during their intense service.

Rotary District 7390 was recognized for our contributions to Polio Plus during the 2016/17 year under PDG Kevin Cogan’s leadership.  Thank you to everyone who contributed!  District Governor Elect, John May, completed the Governor Elect Training during the Zone Institute.  Big congratulations to him!  And many thanks to Past District Governors Tom Davis, Ann Keim, John Kramb, Hector Ortiz, Allen Smith, and Connie Spark for participating and representing the interests of District 7390.

If YOU are interested in experiencing this high level, high quality, life changing event ~ maybe you want to get on the track to becoming a District Governor in the future!  There are so many opportunities to connect with the world of Rotary through district leadership and many different paths to take.  Nominations for District Governor are due by December 15.  Interviews will be held Thursday, January 11, 2018 at the Radisson Hotel in Harrisburg. Applying is simple! Just complete the application, have your Club approve it and submit it to the District office. Questions about becoming Governor? Contact myself or the District office at 717-854-7842 or office@rotary7390.org.

Here are some pictures from the event.

Thank you!

Shouts Outs - Pints for Polio
A collective SHOUT OUT in my loudest and proudest voice to all the Rotarians and friends who participated in Pints for Polio throughout this week.  One of the best things about Rotary is how an idea can take hold and, with the creativity and dedication of many, the sum becomes much greater than the parts.  That’s how it happened with Pints for Polio.  The financial results are not yet in, but the outcomes are clear ~ Pints for Polio brought our district together; it brought people and clubs together for a shared cause; it brought awareness to our efforts to eradicate polio; and it created goodwill and better friendships.  Please enjoy the pictures that have been shared by the clubs listed below.   I LOVE getting to see all of the pictures and welcome additional pictures from any other clubs!  The final opportunity to participate in Pints for Polio is TONIGHT, October 26.  Everyone is welcome to join Pints for Polio happening at Moo Duck Brewery at 79 S. Wilson Avenue in Elizabethtown.  Be safe and enjoy!

Nominations for District Governor 2020-21
The time has come to begin the nominating process for our District Governor 2020-21.  In this way we will continue our three-year projection for District 7390’s leadership.
I encourage all D7390 Clubs to survey your membership and suggest a qualified candidate for the District Governor Nominee 2020-21. Suggestions must be made in the form of a resolution adopted at a regular Club meeting and certified by the Club Secretary. You may suggest a Rotarian from another Club so long as you first obtain the concurrence of the Club where the proposed candidate is a member.
Every club has an outstanding leader who could be a potential District Governor. Look around and ask yourself, who is that person in my club? It is the person who is a good leader, interested, involved, gives financially to Rotary and The Rotary Foundation and is helpful to other members. Ask that person about his or her interest in serving as District Governor. We all need to give encouragement and “plant the seed” for others to move forward.
When submitting a candidate for 2020-21 Governor, the following must be submitted: the Club resolution and the Governor Nominee Data Form (DG App 2020-21).

Rotary Club of Carlisle & Carlisle Sunrise - $16,855.00
Rotary Club of Elizabethtown - $1,661.00
Rotary Club of Lancaster Sunrise - $5,000.00

How to make a donation to D7390 Disaster Relief Fund
Club and Individual Donations can be sent to the Carlisle Rotary Club Foundation, PO Box 301, Carlisle PA 17013. They are the central collection point for our district donations. Donors will receive a tax deductible letter of acknowledgement.

Funds collected for the District Fund will be sent to areas in Texas, Florida and Puerto Rico that can be identified as low income with limited financial resources. Our goal is to be a good shepherd of donor funds, supporting specific identified needs/projects and not simply sending monies for unspecified use.

Organizations identified to receive funds from the D7390 Disaster Relief Fund
D5910 has been selected as a recipient of D7390 funds. Located in south-east Texas, D5910 has a Charitable Foundation to receive donations. Their first project for Hurricane Harvey was the purchase of children’s shoes – to replace wet, dirty, moldy or non-existent footwear. Current donations are being sent to 1) churches that have opened their doors to out-of-town volunteers who work on restoring homes, the donation will assist the churches with the cost of housing these volunteer groups, and 2) local clubs are forming their own disaster response teams to repair homes, donations will assist these clubs in the purchase of needed materials.

Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders has been selected as a recipient of D7390 funds. FCDR has set up a recovery site in the south-east area of Texas, establishing case management and volunteer housing, and providing leadership of volunteer work crews. They have made a three-year commitment to restore homes in this area.

Where have funds been distributed?
  1. Rotary Club of York sent their $18,000.00 directly to the Rotary Club of Beaumont, Texas. Beaumont is in the center of an area hard hit by Hurricane Harvey.
  2. The District Fund has sent $10,000.00 to Fuller Center Disaster Rebuilders; they have received two truckloads of drywall donated by Orphan Grain Train to begin repairs following the mucking of flooded homes. Our $10,000.00 donation is being used to set up the volunteer camp and to hire caseworkers and construction supervisors.
Has your club made donations directly to areas affected by Hurricanes Harvey, Irma and Maria?
If your club has made donations directly to these areas, please let us know. We would like to include your club in the district reports.

Goals set for Florida and Puerto Rico
As of this date the District Fund has not identified a recipient in Florida or Puerto Rico. Damage in Florida seems to be focused on clean-up and crisis counseling. In Puerto Rico, the continuing lack of water, sanitation, utilities and infrastructure is stalling any significant restoration work. If you have information regarding restoration efforts in either Florida or Puerto Rico, please send that lead to our District Committee.

Clubs Work Together to Plant Trees

Well, we did it! Over 30 Rotarians and friends of Rotary came out to plant 175 seedlings to protect along the Conewago Creek. This was a collaboration with the Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Eastern York County and Lancaster-Hempfield Rotary Clubs. We combined resources to purchase the trees. We had so much help that we ran out of trees to plant after about an hour!

We're sending out a big Thank You to Bower & Branch for hooking us up with the trees and some helpers, the Tri-County Conewago Creek Association along with Kristen Kyler and Sarah from Penn State Harrisburg's Agriculture and Environment Center for all their help!

Gettysburg Club Awards Humanitarian Award to Rotarian Ken Farabaugh

Ken Farabaugh has been a busy man

The recently-retired Prudential agent has spent as much time, or more, working in Adams County the past four decades as he did giving back.

Leading the Rotary Club of Gettysburg Youth Exchange Program and serving as a board member and president of the Adams County Community Foundation are at the pinnacle of his humanitarian efforts. Farabaugh also volunteered for Historic Gettysburg Adams County, TrueNorth Wellness, Special Olympics, Saint Mary's Catholic Church, Gettysburg College Community Affairs Committee, United Way of Adams County, Liberty Township Planning Commission, Gettysburg Adams Chamber of Commerce, Gettysburg Lutheran Seminary Business Advisory Council, Adams County Economic Development Corporation, and Adams County Industrial Development Authority.

Farabaugh also placed an easement on his Liberty Township property through the Land Conservancy of Adams County, perpetually preventing development on the land.

For his generosity, the Rotary Club of Gettysburg awarded Farabaugh with its President Dwight David Eisenhower Humanitarian Award. The club accepts nominations annually but only presents an award when it believes someone who deserves it is among the nominees.

Ken and his wife Connie, a past receipient of the honor, have counseled more than 100 foreign exchange students from 30 countries, about 50 of whom stayed in the Farabaugh home. The same amount of students from Adams County have traveled abroad for schooling under the Farabaughs' guidance.

The Adams County Community Foundation was incorporated in 2007 with $350,000 invested. About $15,000 was distributed that year. Thanks to the work of Farabaugh and other founding board members, the foundation now has more than $11 million in assets and distributed $730,000 in 2016.

As he began his acceptance speech, Farabaugh quoted motivational speaker Charlie "Tremendous" Jones who said “You will be the same person in five years as you are today except for the people you meet and the books you read.” Farabaugh then deflected the praise from him onto those who guided and assisted him through the years, especially his wife. "We have never had any children of our own, but we have children all over the world," Farabaugh said, referring to those he met through Rotary's Youth Exchange Program. "Connie and I have had some truly rewarding experiences."

The Rotary Club of Gettysburg has presented the Eisenhower Humanitarian Award since 2002. It was originally presented by the Palm Desert (California) Chamber of Commerce, Eisenhower and comedian Bob Hope being the first recipients. It was transferred to The Rotary Club of Gettysburg because of the area's close ties to Eisenhower.

Dr. Michael Birkner, a Gettysburg College history professor, said the award meant a lot to Eisenhower because it was the first time the decorated war hero was recognized for his humanitarian work.

York Club Plants Trees!
On Saturday, October 14, 2017, a team of Rotarians from the Rotary Club of York’s Preserve Planet Earth Committee, friends, and family members helped to plant 15 trees throughout the city of York.  Some of the species of tree that were planted were Red Point Maple, Lilac, Hornbeam, and Cleveland Pear.  The 15 trees were planted on Merion Ave., Arlington Rd., East Market St., East King St., West College Ave., and Allen Park. This on-going project has now planted more than 500 trees it the City of York.   During this service time the volunteers enjoyed a time of fellowship, hard work, and the reward of helping to enhance the tree canopy of the City of York.
